Gulf of Mexico anglers continue to hold out hope...

that the 2010 red snapper season could be extended this year. However, while many hoped the season would continue after the June 23 closure, state and federal rule-makers say they must examine the data before deciding whether the season can be re-opened sometime after Sept. 30.

At its meeting in Gulfport, Mississippi last month, the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council (Gulf Council) agreed to a recommendation that could allow NOAA Fisheries Southeast Regional Administrator Roy Crabtree to extend snapper season if the quota was not met.
