New options for hunters who camp on Ocala WMA

Hunters planning to camp during the upcoming general gun hunting season on the Ocala Wildlife Management Area (WMA) will have some new options to consider this year. The general gun season in Ocala WMA is Nov. 8 through Jan. 4, 2009, except in the Church Lake Unit, where it is Nov. 8-16 and Nov. 22-30.

Hunter camps are open during the general gun season only. The U.S. Forest Service will offer five hunter camps this year, situated throughout the Ocala National Forest. Disappearing Creek was eliminated as a hunter camp due to operating costs and resource impacts.

New for this year, hunters can purchase a hunt camp pass for either the first or the second part of the season for $30, or they can purchase both passes for $60. Each camping period is approximately 30 days long. Hunt camps will open at 8 a.m., Friday, Nov. 7, and close at 6 p.m., Monday, Jan. 5, 2009.

Also new this year, hunter camps have designated campsites, with a maximum of five people and two vehicles allowed per site. The vehicles would be in addition to a camper, recreational vehicle (RV) or tent.

Hunter camp passes are available now at the Lake George Ranger District and the Seminole Ranger District offices, and Ocala National Forest visitor centers. For camp locations, passes and more information, call Heather Callahan, 352-669-3153 or 352-434-2975.
