FWC to improve aids to navigation at Suwannee River entrance channels

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has scheduled improvements to the aids to navigation that mark the Suwannee River entrance channels at Alligator Pass, McGriff Channel/Wadley Pass and Salt Creek.

The work includes replacing and relocating several red and green dayboard marine aids to navigation panels and repairing the two existing marine flashing beacon lanterns.

This construction project in Dixie and Levy counties is expected to begin in early March and be completed by the end of April.

As a result of a survey conducted to determine the area’s water depths, FWC coordinated with the U.S. Coast Guard on the relocation and re-numbering of several dayboards. The channel being marked is not dredged, but the markers will be placed to guide boaters in the deepest available channel identified at the time of the survey. This should minimize the risk of grounding.

The new navigation panels will be constructed using highly reflective sheeting material, which should improve their visibility to vessel operators.

This work will improve the boating experience in the area.

Boaters are urged to use caution, particularly in the narrow and shallow areas, while construction is under way.
