Recreation areas closed due to flooding along Apalachicola River
TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2016—For Immediate Release. The Apalachicola National Forest has closed several recreation areas along the Apalachicola River due to flooding over the weekend. These sites will remain closed for public health and safety until further notice.
The recreation areas affected are Hickory Landing, Cotton Landing and White Oak Hunt Camps along with Forest Roads 101-B, 123 and 115, which are impassible at this time. Ashley Landing at Forest Road 101-A and most of the Wright Lake Recreation Area walking trail is flooded as well. Access to Wright Lake along Forest Road 101 is safe and only the campground is open to forest visitors.
Camel Lake Campground remains open to visitors, while Fort Gadsden National Historic Landmark did not flood; it remains closed until further notice.
These sites and roads are signed and/or flagged to caution visitors to the forest. The public should observe all road closure signage and drivers should be particularly cautious when traveling through these areas as they may find hazardous road conditions.
“We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but ask the public to respect and obey all road and recreation area closures during this time for their own safety,” said Recreation Manager Chandra Roberts. “We will continue to monitor and assess the situation so that we can quickly reopen these areas to the public.”
Forest visitors are encouraged to go the Apalachicola National Forest news and events webpage at http://www.fs.usda.gov/news/apalachicola/news-events for the latest forest updates, rules and regulations. Persons entering areas and roads under temporary closure may be ticketed or cited.
